Frequently asked questions

Getting Started

I don't have a degree. Can I still apply?

Unfortunately, our minimum education level is a bachelor's degree. Our parents percieve this to be important and it is essential that we maintain parents' expectations.

Where can I live to be eligible to provide services on the BaboGO platform?

Anywhere because that's the whole point! You are expected to be able to provide your service to the expected standards, which means as long as your equipment and internet is working to the desired standard, you are free to work anywhere.

What is the process of application like?

Applicants have to pass through five stages before becoming BaboGO teachers:
1. Register: Complete the online registration form so that we can screen for basic requirements and teaching experience.
2. Interview: Pass a recorded Interview.
3. Teacher Training: Watch videos to learn how to use the teaching methods to teach the curriculum and learn how to use the online classroom technology.
4. Final Evaluation: Conduct a mock lesson teaching a full-length class with one of our trainers (either recorded or live). Here is also where you will be evaluated.
5. Contract: Sign your contract and furnish the relevant documents such as qualification certificates. This information is for compliance purposes to satisfy our online safety and security standards, and it allows us to create a profile that will enable BaboGO students and parents to get to know you and to book you.

What is the contract length?

The contract is a continuous 6-month contract. This means that it renews automatically after 6 months unless notice is given by you or by the company. Notice can be given by email.

What equipment do I need?

You will need:

  1. Computer: Either a desktop or laptop.
  2. HD Camera: Either a computer built-in camera or an external one.
  3. Headset with a microphone.
  4. Minimum operating system: Windows7 or Mac OS 10.x, a memory of at least 4GB RAM, Intel i5 processor
  5. Stable internet connection: Ethernet recommended and at least 20 Mbps.

I cannot register - it just turns grey. What should I do?

Please try using a different web browser or device to register to sign up.

I can’t submit my documents can I send them by email?

You should be able to submit documents if they are in standard Word of PDF formats. If you are using another format to submit, please put them into Word or PDF and try again.

If you still cannot submit the documents you can email us your documents at teach@babogo.com where we will try to conect them on the system with your application. However, this is likely to cause a delay or, on some occasions, it may not be possible to unite them with your registration.

Interview

Where does the booked final evaluation (mock lesson) take place?

You will be sent the link to the platform, where you will log in with the password sent to you via SMS. If for whatever reason you cannot find the password in your messages, you can simply click forgot password to create a new password. You can enter a temporary classroom to practise anytime. You can enter the classroom of the mock lesson 20 minutes prior to the scheduled time. You should ensure you have tested your equipment before the mock lesson. This is extremely important to ensure you have a smooth delivery. There is nothing more stressful than teaching midway only to have your internet breakdown on you!

How important is the final evaluation?

Very important! We use it to figure out if you are a good fit to be a BaboGO teacher, to see if you have the right qualities we are looking for. We also use it to determine your starting pay per lesson.

What are we looking for in the mock lesson?

We are looking for the following things:

  1. Personality: how energetic, enthusiastic and smiley you are. How you use body language to help you communicate
  2. Teaching method: how well you understand and deliver the curriculum
  3. Teaching skill: how you manage your time and general teaching skill
Of the above, personality is the MOST important trait we are assessing. If you have the right personality, the rest will come with time and experience.

Are there any tips to help me with passing the final evaluation?

Yes, make sure you:

  1. Complete the training and learn the content.
  2. Get some practice in at a temporary classroom where it is just yourself.
  3. Make sure you look good! Ensure you have good lighting and a plain background.
  4. Make sure you have a good, stable internet connection. Imagine your internet breaking mid evaluation!

Being a BaboGO teacher

How many kids are there in a class?

All classes are held one-to-one, meaning there will be one teacher and one student.

How old will the children be?

Children are from the ages of 4 to 12.

Do I need to plan for my lessons?

Our curriculum is fully developed. There are lesson plans for every lesson. You do not need to develop your own content. What's more, we will train you precisely on how to use our curriculum. In fact, our success relies on teachers using our curriculum and our teaching method precisely. You are prohibited from using your own materials and teaching method. You can however add toys to help you teach, like a puppet, but the materials and the method must be the BaboGO way! While you don't need to plan for your lessons, you should prepare! You should review the materials ahead of class so there will be no embaressing moments.

Do I need to communicate with parents?

You will be asked by the platform to complete a short lesson report after each lesson and to award your students with stars but you won't be expected to engage with direct communication with parents.

Would I be teaching the same students regularly?

We hope so. As a teacher, it is way more satisfying to be teaching a student over time, to see his or her progress and improvements over time. However, how sticky a student is will depend on how awesome you are as a teacher.

How are the classes conducted?

You will be teaching your classes via an online app which you will download onto your computer. It looks like Skype but there is an online classroom which you and your students can enter to conduct the classes. You will need a headset with mic, a clear background and good lighting.

Payment

Do I have to pay tax?

As an independent contractor, you are responsible for your own tax in your tax jurisdiction. While our company is incorporated in Hong Kong, you will not have a duty to pay Hong Kong income tax.

When and how will I get paid?

You will get paid no later than the 7th to 12th day of each month. You will be paid through direct bank transfer.

What happens if I want to go on holiday? Can I take a break?

Well, since you don't need to be fixed in one location, you can actually teach your classes on holiday (should you wish to do so). Otherwise, if you want a short break, just let us know 2 weeks in advance so we can inform the parents. Afterall, you would want your students to return to you when you resume teaching rather than to start from scratch to build up your hours again!

What will my pay be?

Every BaboGO teacher will be assigned a unit rate of pay. This is the base pay for every 25 minute class that you teach. On top of this, we have a bonus incentive add-on programme that incentivises you to teach more. The more you teach, the greater your bonus! You can read more about this in the Bonus Incentive Add-on section. So your pay for every class will be:
Unit pay + Bonus The unit pay is between £5-£7 per 25 minute lesson (£10-£14 per hour) and is subject to your qualifications, experience and your performance in your lesson evaluation.

Can you show me an example of how pay is calculated?

BaboGO teachers will be paid their unit rate PLUS incentive add-ons per class they teach. The incentive add-on programme is created to incentivise teachers to teach more classes. The more you teach, the more you are rewarded. Here is an example for a new teacher who teaches 4 hours a day (8 classes) for 5 days a week. 1 Day = 8 classes 1 Week = 5 working days 1 Week = 40 classes (8 classes X 5 days) 1 Year = 2,080 classes (52 weeks X 40 classes) 1 Month = 173 classes (2,080 classes a year / 12 month)
So if a new teacher's unit rate is £6.03 a class and this teacher teaches 173 classes, then the following table shows you how the pay is worked out for the month. The total pay would be £1,268.60 The average hourly pay for this new teacher would be £14.48

Bonus Incentive Add-On

The Bonus Incentive Add-On is a bonus that incentivises teachers to teach more. It is a bonus that is added onto your unit rate of pay per lesson. It works by rewarding you on two scales, the lifetime number of classes you have taught and the total number of classes you have taught for the month. There are ten levels with each level representing a range of lifetime number of taught classes. The higher your level, the greater the number of lifetime classes you have taught and thus the greater the bonus. Every month, you are also rewarded for teaching more lessons. Every single month at the 1st day of the month, every BaboGO teacher resets back to band A, and as they teach more classes, they progress through the bands up to the maximum of band G. Just like with the levels, the further up the band you progress, the greater your bonus. In short, the greater number of classes you teach on a lifetime and monthly basis, then the greater the bonus, which means the greater your unit rate of pay. The table shows the bonus programme in detail.

Bookings

How long does each class last?

Each class lasts for 25 minutes, but you are actually paid for 30 minutes. The 5 minutes is used for writing the lesson report and to load the materials of your following lesson.

How are the classes scheduled?

You will inform our consultants with your available schedule and we will book classes according to your schedule. When you have sent your schedule to us, you are required to honour that schedule. Teachers can be booked with no less than 24 hours notice in advance. It is imperative that teachers check their email and their phone for instant messages.

What hours should I be available for?

The hours can be from: The following table shows the peak hours for children in Hong Kong presented in Beijing time. Please note that children in China cannot do the morning (am) session for weekdays.

How many hours can I teach?

You can teach as many hours as you like! There are no maximum except how many you can fit in one day. Please note that it will take time to build up your portfolio of students.

Transfer to Hong Kong

Can I transfer to teach in a Babington Education learning centre in Hong Kong?

Yes! We have more than 20 licensed schools in Hong Kong, operating as learning centres. The curriculum and the teaching method is very similar to what you have been used to in BaboGO. One of the main difference is that you will be teaching in a group of up to 6 face-to-face instead of one-to-one online. The company will apply for your work visa, and you will also receive paid in-person training before teaching.
If you are interested, please contact us, and we will connect you to the other side of our business.

Further Questions

I also want to know...

There is a further FAQ inside the members only section of the website which you can refer to if/when your application has been approved and you begin training. This will cover further information about teaching / software / operations etc.
